Speculative Fiction in VR: Space Transmission
Design can seek to solve future problems as well as contemporary ones. While we might not be able to create these technologies today, VR provides a powerful tool to immerse ourselves in future scenarios to test out concepts.
I was given the starting point of using “The Thing From the Future", Situation Lab's imagination game, to generate a future problem to solve. The draw was to be a job related to marriage in a joyful future. With 2020 as a larger backdrop, I decided to focus on how remote communication might help people maintain relationships in the future...
What if in the early colonization of our solar system, people have to live in isolation? How could they perform their daily rituals with distant loved ones?
My solution involved a holographic projection to have a 3D projection of the person you were having dinner with. Considering how current XR technology allows you to feel the presence of others, future technologies will allow this even more. By showcasing this is virtual reality there you get a meta experience where we look at the spatial computing power of tomorrow within the confines of that technology we have today.
Key Interactions
Initiate Call
After entering the kitchen you can initiate call at terminal. There is a glowing hint to help the user know where to go.
Get Your Dinner
Food is already prepared and on the counter. After initial testing showed it wasn’t obvious, I improved lighting to help guide the user.
Sit Down For Dinner
After grabbing your food you can sit down for dinner and have a conversation with a hologram of a loved one who is far away.
